International Workshop in June

The internationalisation 2022 Workshop was carried out

The UM’s department of International Relations organised the eleventh rendition of the event.

The now classic Workshop proposed a series of informative talks, commenting on the developments and efforts of internationalising the separate units of the school’s house. The event was attended by officials and spokespeople from the different academic areas and the management of the University.

On Wednesday the 8th of June, the activity began with an introduction by UM’s director of International Relations (IR), Dr Luisa Peirano, who commented on the mission and responsibilities of the School of IR and the internationalisation targets achieved in 2021.

Subsequently, the administrator of International Development, Ms Virginia Whitelaw, spoke about the new agreements that the university signed, the development of students' mobility and the post-pandemic situation. She highlighted the positive experiences of the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) that developed at UM since before the pandemic, that grew during the health emergency of 2020 and 2021, and that continue to evolve in current study programs at UM. She thanked the co-ordinators of the courses that promoted these experiences, especially in the International Business classrooms, where the synergy was a natural step for the approach of the degree.

Then, the spokesperson for optimisation and process quality, Engr. Elizabeth Scherschener, spoke about the different types of rankings in which UM is involved, she explained the work dynamics and the gauge readings. She highlighted that the University of Montevideo rose by twenty points since the 2021 submission of QS World University Rankings, thus keeping itself in the top 500 establishments on the international list.

In addition, the UM academic secretariat, Dr Enrique Etchevarren, gave a presentation on the SDGs and the work of the University. In May he shared his experience at the International Conference that took place at the University of Navarra, entitled ‘Universities in pursuit of sustainability”, and he explained the impact that SDGs have on the UM’s different strategic directions and the importance of “giving content to SDGs in the university field”.

The activity was brought to an end by Prof. Santiago Sena, who talked remotely about Management Education and Sustainability & Social integration. Thereupon, he highlighted the different activities that IEEM (UM’s business School) conducts based on their social impact and recent agreement with Social Lab. Additionally, he highlighted that IEEM has adhered to the UN’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and, in doing so, it has strongly committed itself with the values of sustainability, responsibility, ethical teaching, investigation and conscious leadership.
