The University of Montevideo ranked first among the private universities in the country. The QS World University Rankings ranking consists of nine indicators, each with a different weight. In the 2025 edition, UM was positioned first in Uruguay in four areas: employer reputation, professor-to-student ratio, international faculty, and international students.

The UM is ranked second nationally in the academic reputation indicator, below the University of the Republic. The other indicators considered are academic reputation, the ratio of citations per faculty, international research network, impact on employability, and sustainability. These last two were incorporated into last year's measurement, so the relative position of many universities worldwide has changed.
